How Many Police Agencies Are Going After Darknet Markets?
Financial Institutions
As one of the burgeoning fields in cybercrime, the volume of content on darknets and the number of people using them (especially Tor) is growing continuously. Although not all darknet activities are illicit (Mirea et al. 2019), organized criminals working within the darknet constantly develop their capabilities, security mechanisms and business tor markets practices (Gupta et al. 2021; Rojas-Sanchez et al. 2022). As darknets strengthen their levels of security, gaining access and having a meaningful impact have become more complicated and costly, making it increasingly difficult to achieve progress at an individual research level (Demant et al. 2018a, b; Martin 2014a; Martin and Christin 2016).

Several sites hosting illegal material have been discovered by government agencies and shut down in recent years, including Silk Road, AlphaBay, and Hansa. The dark web’s anonymity has also led to cybersecurity threats and various data breaches over the last few decades. Most arrests connected to the operation (153) took place access dark web in the U.S., but other countries also utilized their law enforcement departments to arrest individuals involved in the global drug ring. To orchestrate the bust, Europol, released a statement saying it seized 50.8 million euros ($53.4 million) in cash and virtual currencies, plus 850 kilograms of drugs and 117 firearms.
As a result, Bitzlato facilitates a substantially greater proportion of money laundering activity in connection with Russian illicit finance compared to other virtual currency exchanges. Bitzlato’s continued facilitation of Russia-connected darknet markets, even after public action targeting darknet markets, further illustrates its ongoing engagement with illicit actors and lack of adequate controls. As described in the order, effective February 1, 2023, covered financial institutions are prohibited from engaging in a transmittal of funds from or to Bitzlato, or from or to any account or CVC address administered by or on behalf of Bitzlato. The empirical research findings of this study have provided lessons that can be used in the design of future criminological research and the strategic planning of criminal policy. The main contribution of this research is the development of the trust matrix, which can enhance criminological research on how trust works in darknet transactions.
The darknet, a part of the internet that is intentionally hidden and inaccessible through standard web browsers, has become a hotbed for illicit activities, including the sale of illegal dark web monitor drugs, weapons, and other contraband. As a result, law enforcement agencies around the world have turned their attention to darknet markets and the individuals who operate them.
The Rise of Darknet Markets
Darknet markets, also known as cryptomarkets, are online marketplaces where vendors and buyers can transact anonymously using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The first darknet market, the Silk Road, was launched in 2011 and quickly gained popularity due to its ability to facilitate the sale of illegal drugs with relative ease and anonymity. Since then, the number of darknet markets has exploded, with some estimates suggesting that there are now over 50 active markets operating on the darknet.
Law Enforcement Response
- Chainalysis has no responsibility or liability for any decision made or any other acts or omissions in connection with Recipient’s use of this material.
- After the Biker DLC, players can now purchase buildings for illegal drugs and counterfeit products manufacture, and distribute them through a darknet website called “The Open Road” where law enforcement cannot be notified of the player’s trade.
- One hundred and fifty-three of the 288 vendors and buyers were arrested in the U.S., 55 in the U.K., 52 in Germany, 10 in the Netherlands, nine in Austria, five in France, two in Switzerland, and one each in Poland and Brazil.
As the popularity of darknet markets has grown, so too has the response from law enforcement agencies. In recent years, there have been numerous high-profile operations targeting darknet markets and their operators. For example, in 2017, the FBI, DEA, and Europol announced the takedown of AlphaBay and Hansa, two of the largest darknet markets at the time. The operation, which was conducted over a period of several months, resulted in the arrest of more than 40 individuals and the seizure of millions of dollars in cryptocurrencies.
But despite these successes, the challenge of combating darknet markets remains significant. One of the key difficulties is the decentralized nature of the darknet, which makes it difficult for law enforcement agencies to track down and apprehend those responsible for operating these markets. Additionally, the use of cryptocurrencies and other anonymizing technologies makes it difficult to trace financial transactions and identify those involved in illegal activities.
